Santa Barbara – the “American Riviera” – has become a world-class wine region over the past fifty years. It is home to a surprisingly broad range of terroirs – from the warmer inland reaches of the Santa Ynez Valley, which produces lush and opulent wines from Bordeaux and Rhone varieties, to the windswept Northern Santa Maria Valley, where modern commercial viticulture in the area first returned after Prohibition, to the coastal Sta. Rita Hills, a unique East/West transverse valley with a cool ocean breeze that produces ethereal Pinot Noir, crisp Chardonnay, and spicy Syrah.
Join Wine Guide Jim as we go beyond Sideways and dive deeply into this remarkable place. We’ll learn about Father Junipero Serra and wine made from the “Mission” grape in the 1780’s, French exploration and viticulture in the 1880’s, and the modern Santa Barbara renaissance that began the 1970’s. Along the way, we’ll taste five examples that showcase the diversity of a place with wines as beautiful as the countryside.
Light cheese and charcuterie will be provided to pair with the wines.
